Business context

Gas well performance is controlled by the combination of inflow and outflow performance. The outflow performance of any gas well is at risk as soon as the gas rate becomes insufficient to lift the associated liquid water and condensate to surface. This condition is referred to as liquid loading and invariably causes significant loss of well capacity and reserves.

The objectives of this course are (1) to recognize and predict liquid loading, (2) to understand how liquid loading can be mitigated by gas well deliquification, (3) to quantify and compare the benefits of different deliquification measures, and (4) to select, design, install and operate the best deliquification option.

This course builds upon the skills and tools of the Gas Well Performance training and can be scheduled consecutively.

Course content

  1. Basics: refresh knowledge of gas well inflow, outflow and reservoir performance.
  2. Liquid loading: understand and recognize liquid loading behavior; model minimum stable gas rate and corresponding reservoir pressure; predict liquid loading date.
  3. Intermittent production: understand and optimize intermittent production by cycling.
  4. Surface compression: understand and model unique benefits of surface compression; consider and select compressor suction pressure, location and design.
  5. Velocity string: model velocity string; consider velocity string size and completion design.
  6. Plunger lift: understand and model plunger lift; consider operating envelope and design.
  7. Foam-assisted lift: understand and model foam-assisted lift; consider operating envelope and design.
  8. Gas lift: understand and model gas lift; consider operating envelope and design.
  9. Downhole pump: understand and model downhole pump; consider operating envelope and design.
  10. Select gas well deliquification option: compare benefits and economics of deliquification scenarios; select best option; consider timing.
  11. Install and operate gas well deliquification: review practical aspects of field implementation. 

Learning, methods and tools

The course consists of a series of lectures followed by exercises. The lectures are interactive with field examples to illustrate concepts and promote discussion. The exercises make use of a series of Excel worksheets for back-of-the-envelope calculations, similar to the worksheets used in the Gas Well Performance and Gas Well Review training. Participants are expected to evaluate liquid loading and deliquification for one of their wells. A list of data requirements will be shared so data can be collected beforehand. When available and requested, dedicated gas well performance software will be used as well (e.g. PROSPER).

The course describes the technical basis of the available gas well deliquification techniques, and provides the skills and tools to model the deliquification benefits to help maximize gas well capacity and reserves e.g. as part of the periodic review of gas well performance.
