Mia van Steenwinkel

Mia Van Steenwinkel (1956) has a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Leuven (Belgium). She started working in Shell in 1989 as a carbonate research geologist. From 1992 to 2008 she worked for Shell's operational unit Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), in both exploration and production environments. In exploration she dealt with regional play analysis to detailed prospect evaluation and maturation, of both carbonate and siliciclastic plays. As a senior production geologist, she was responsible for static modelling and field development planning of numerous oil and gas fields, including Enhanced Oil Recovery projects.

As a carbonate reservoir characterization expert, she was responsible for coordination of studies and service providers, company-wide carbonate reservoir support and advice, field reviews, training and coaching. In the role of PDO's Work Place Learning facilitator, she designed and facilitated technical and leadership workshops, training seminars (using Accelerated Learning principles), opportunity framing workshops, and new-graduates programmes for PDO and Shell. She has 25+ years experience in guiding geological field trips and outcrop analogues training for a large variety of hydrocarbon plays and reservoirs of various geological ages in Oman and Europe. She is currently working as an independent geological consultant & trainer.
